Oops.. and Yay!

Hey, all!

I'm sorry I haven't posted in so long, but long story short, I was accepted! I am a young student ambassador that is going to live in Germany for a full year. As such, I have been filling out paperwork and figuring out college details like crazy. There was so much to do, and even more, now that I am leaving for orientation tonight. I have found out where I am staying, a lot about my host family, and even more about just how much I don't know. The culture is a little overwhelming, and so is the idea of being thrown into a country to learn a whole new language. Being that I only made this blog to be used if I was accepted, I will add more about myself now and keep updates regularly.

My full name is Michaela Roberts, and I am 16, soon to be 17 in November. I live in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the US, with my parents, grandmother, 2 cats, and 1 dog. I will be a senior in high school, living in the small town of Clenze. Clenze is a very small, rural town in the Landkreis Lüchow-Dannenberg county of Lower Saxony, Germany. Clenze is between Hamburg and Hanover, with a 3 hour distance to Berlin. I am going to be living in a family with two parents, a sister (18), and a brother (13). My family has 2 dogs, Anton and Jacko, along with 2 horses, Gustav and Worri, which are kept in a barn nearby. My school is less than a mile away from my home, so walking will be my new method of transportation. This is going to be a large change from home, as my school is about 11 miles away, with an hour and a half bus commute every morning and afternoon. However, I am so excited for the change, for the chance to experience a life unlike anything in the US, and the chance to become more worldly. Hopefully, as time progresses, more of these posts can be in German, rather than English, as I learn the language and become more comfortable in my new skin as a German student.

Hopeful and Waiting.

Hey, all!

My name is Michaela and I am a hopeful applicant of the 2014-2015 CBYX program. CBYX is an international travel exchange program supported by the US Congress and the German Bundestag. This is basically a chance for me to travel to Germany and live with a host family for 11 months.. wait for it.. for free! It's an amazing opportunity that I just have to try to take advantage of.

At the moment, I am waiting on the answer for whether I am a finalist or not in the program. And let me tell you, this waiting is one of the most nerve-wracking and exciting experiences. As it is, I should know whether I will be going by late March or early April.

Even if I don't make it, I am still really glad that I was able to participate in this, and make it so far. Everyone I've met through the program has been a joy, always helpful. I can only not sit at home, talk with other applicants, bite away my fingernails, and hope.
